Lately I have been on the hunt for some fresh perspective in my faith. I love learning from others and reading stories about how God’s promises have shown up in their own lives in different ways.

There are countless devotionals on the market, ranging in length and topic. I have read many on my own and as a participant in study groups. What I have learned about myself is that, as much as I believe the Word is one-size-fits-all, devotionals… not so much.

I am enchanted by modern journeys of faith too. I have learned that short snippets are perfect for me (I have always been more apt to read 30 chapters at 6 pages each versus 4 chapters at 45 pages each.) Modern girls are often trying to find a balance between busy-body mode and wishing they could do more. We want to practice virtue but we also know we’ve got a long way to grow.

Apart from the substance of the message, I love to pick up a book or journal that looks visually appealing! I know everyone’s style is a little different, but if I see a beautiful cover on my side table, I’m already engaged and want to pick it up.

Whenever I sit down to rest I usually grab my phone because it’s easy and enticing to see all the pretty things social media has to offer today. But when your devotional book looks as pretty as your Instagram feed, you’ve got a little head start in battle to begin.

The following list I’ve created has books that I have read (or am currently reading) and some I have not. I wanted to scour the internet for highly-rated and relatively new devotionals for anyone who wants a quick reference guide!

1. The Weekly Faith Project

The Weekly Faith Project: A Challenge to Journal, Reflect, and Cultivate a Genuine Faith came out in November 2019. It provides 52 prompts, one for each week of the year. This book does not have to be completed in chronological order, so you can skip around to the themes that catch your attention first. Customer reviews give this journal 4.5/5 stars. The book is known for being a beautiful hardcover journal that uses soothing imagery.

I personally like the muted colors and modern images — the pages are decorated minimally with splashes of watercolor and ideally-placed succulents — so cute!

The Weekly Faith Project starts with a verse or short section of the Bible, includes a situational prompt, and then leaves plenty of writing space to reflect on a shortlist of questions. For me, creating a space for writing down my thoughts helps me be accountable to really dive in! It’s available on Amazon for about $10 new.

2. Take It Too Far

Take It Too Far is a book of 100 devotionals by Jess Connolly on topics like peace, fear, fighting, courage, and more. It is meant to be read as a 100-day journey. Reviewers give this book a stellar 5/5 stars.

This book shows off with bold pops of color and clean gold lines. Apart from its beautiful cover, the book’s message is filled with encouragement on each page. The devotionals are no more than two pages, each beginning with a Scripture and continuing into a prompt by the author. Every day, the author helps you explore what it would look like to take each virtue “too far,” in life and relationships. Loving this one so far!

3. What Really Matters: Faith, Hope, Love

What Really Matters is a 365 day devotional from Our Daily Bread. Reviewers give this book 4.8/5 stars and enjoy that the sessions are brief enough to read each morning as part of their routine.

This pretty book has an airy, greenery look and comes in paperback form or Amazon Kindle.

4. A Beautiful Word Devotional

A Beautiful Word Devotional is part of a broader series from A Beautiful Word by the Zondervan publishing house. Reviewers give this one 4.8/5 stars and mention that it has a really nice layout.

This devotional is definitely one for those who need lots of variation and color. The verses for each day are done in creative, handwritten calligraphy and each page brings out the floral theme seen on the cover. A longer commentary on the verse of the day will prompt you to journal through different topics. Click through to take a closer look at this one!

5. 100 Days to Dream Your Heart Out

100 Days to Dream Your Heart Out is a newer devotional journal that made its first appearance in November 2019. Author Katy Fults has created a beautiful book filled with encouragement to dream big, uncover fears, and live in the promises God has for you each day. Reviewers give this devotional 4.9/5 stars for its quick scripture readings, beautiful design, and inspiring words of truth and wisdom!

No matter where we are in our walk of life or faith, reading and reflecting on the Word will help us strengthen our relationship with God and with everyone around us. Sometimes, it just really helps to have a beautiful and organized layout to aid the process.

By the way… if you are looking for a little more accountability to help get started, I invite you to join Grace Increased, a private Bible study group for women.
