From June through September each year, the Southern Hemisphere’s winter, hundreds of humpback whales migrate from the Antarctic waters up north to the warmer Pacific (I would too). Knowing that Brisbane isn’t too far from Moreton Bay, I wanted to take advantage of this phenomenon; so we decided to spend a day going out to Moreton Island to experience it first-hand!
The tour we booked was through the Tangalooma Island Resort and it certainly did not disappoint. We were able to take a ride to Moreton Island in the morning and spend a few hours exploring the resort before our 12 o’clock whale watching tour.
The resort itself offers several attractions, perfect for couples or the whole family. Take a tour of the island on a dune buggy, snorkel among the Tangalooma Wrecks, or even feed the dolphins! You can book an overnight stay, but these activities are available for day-trippers like us as well!
While you can never be exactly sure what you’ll encounter, but the tour company guaranteed whale sightings or your money back, so I felt pretty confident we would see some whales. Luckily, we got up close to a small pod that played, breeched, and waved at us. It was so sweet to see the mom and calf taking a break from their long journey north! The whales are definitely as big as you can imagine, but probably cuter than you imagine too!
When you look out into the open waters and try to take in the ocean’s vastness, you’re quick to remember how little you are in the scheme of life on earth. The world is enormous, spectacular, mysterious, and beautiful. I loved being able to share this experience with Caleb. If you’re ever in the Brisbane area, this adventurous, one-of-a-kind day trip is so worth it!
