5 Low-Cost Things to Do in Brisbane

We all know budgets can be tight at times, but that’s no excuse not to have the most perfectly fun day in the city! In Brisbane, Caleb and I shared a fun day together while not spending much money at all. We only spent money at one place, and that’s because it involved dessert!

Our plan worked well for us because, at the time, I was still job hunting, it was around Valentine’s Day, and luxury gifts just were not on our radar. Luckily, we were able to get a little creative and you can too!

There’s so much to do and see in a city like Brisbane, even if you’re on a limited budget.

My Top 5 Things to do in Brisbane for a Low-Cost, Fun Day

1. Check out the Queensland Gallery and Gallery of Modern Art.

Even if museums aren’t normally your thing, you can’t help but enjoy the unique exhibits on display at the GOMA. It’s really easy to get to the museum, too. Just take the bus or train to Cultural Centre Station. For Caleb and me, this option was a bit nostalgic because one of our very first dates was at a similar type of art gallery in Indianapolis. The Queensland Gallery of Modern Art is 3 levels, full of beautiful exhibits and creations. Best part — admission is FREE!

2. Take a stroll down the river walk at South Bank Parklands

South Bank has to be one of my absolute favorite spots in all of Brisbane! Walk the streets markets, stroll along the river walk and take in the charm of the city.

Then dip your toes in the water at City Beach, manmade lagoon right on the edge of the Central Business District (meaning, all the city skyscrapers can be seen right across the river). The beach even lifeguards so it’s safe for the whole family. There are also water park features and fun playgrounds for the kids. FREE!

3. Treat yourself to some chocolate

Max Brenner Chocolate Bar is located just near the South Bank beach. This is a very popular spot and the line is often out the door!

Coming here is a chocolate lover’s dream. This was our splurge of the day because we bought and shared a dessert together. It was called the “Chocolate Mess Party for Two,” and it certainly lives up to its name!

4. Visit Brisbane Botanic Gardens

Brisbane is a big city, but the surrounding terrain is so unique that you don’t have to go far to find an escape in nature (if that’s your thing!). The Botanic Gardens at the base of Mt. Coot-tha are an amazing escape, perfect for the late afternoon. And it’s completely free to enter!

5. Catch the best view of the city at Mt Coot-tha Lookout

Mt. Coot-tha is perfect for a picnic at any one of its several public BBQs. You can drive to the summit and take in the beauty of the city from afar. It’s just as beautiful at the break of dawn, midday, or evening.

And Don’t Forget!

This shortlist just tips the bucket on fun Brisbane excursions that don’t break the bank. Keep a lookout for more posts and resource guides coming your way soon!
