Outdoor Exercise for Cooler Spring Days

It’s officially the first day of spring! Early spring can tend to be cooler and grey, and with current circumstances regarding the health of our communities, it might feel difficult to navigate uncertainties. I’m there with you! Even though we’re working toward warmer weather and brighter days, I think there are still ways to feel good and get some exercise safely.

Caleb and I like to go for walks in our neighborhood for lots of reasons. We enjoy that walking together seems to open up conversations that may not have happened otherwise. When we are indoors, it’s so easy to remain in front of our screens. Outside, I feel a bit freer to see ahead (literally and figuratively), focus, and reflect. It’s a designated 40-60 minutes of time together with no distractions to just talk about whatever is on our minds.

If you’re outside alone, just make sure you’re in a trusted area with good lighting around, have your phone, and stay close enough that you can easily get back in case of emergency. Even if you don’t have a walking buddy, you can certainly still use the time alone in the crisp air to think and get some exercise!

To keep warm in the cooler spring weather, I recommend wearing a few layers on top, long leggings or joggers, and a hat when temperatures are lower than 60 degrees.

I like to start off with a tank like this Under Armour one. I like looser-fitting tanks, personally, because they’re more breathable and a bit longer in the fit.

I like to throw on an old sweatshirt over it. I’m wearing one from my college days that has served me well over the years 😉 When I’m outside I like to have a good weather-proof jacket as well. Mine here is from Columbia. Here is a similar one from the same brand.

Leggings are everywhere these days and come in so many fun prints and colors! When I’m running outside, I like to wear high-waisted leggings that keep me secure with all the movement. I love to mix it up from the standard black sometimes and go for pretty colors. Leggings like these high-waisted burgundy ones look nice with a neutral color like black, white, or grey on top.

I love wearing hats outside when I’m going for a walk or run. I don’t have to worry about what my hair looks like or worry about it blowing in my face. I’m wearing a men’s hat from The North Face; here’s a similar one.

Last, but certainly not least, are the shoes! Running shoes are so important and I feel like I still have so much to learn and try out there. My favorite ones right now are the Adidas Running Asweego with these bright yellow accents. I love how lightweight they are. They also give my flatter feet a good amount of arch support. The mesh top is really flexible but the soles have good traction for outdoor running. It also helps that they’re super cute to look at!

I really hope you’re able to get outside (safely!) a little this spring, if not only for exercise, for good conversation, reflecting, and dreaming!
