Way back before we were even a couple, Caleb told me he wanted to be a surgeon and that it was going to be a long road, probably really difficult at times, and that it would come with some sacrifices. He has always been so intentional with me and our life together, and he wasn’t wrong. The road to becoming a doctor (or any medical professional) is long and takes big sacrifices. But we are finally done with medical school and in year one of his residency! It’s like a train that just keeps getting faster – and I’m just the spouse, so kudos to all you medical professionals putting in the work.

In our next chapter, we get to settle in for 7 years at our new house in Shreveport, Louisiana. Never did I think I’d be living life in the deep south but here we are! I’m so thankful he matched into this program and is on his way to the next set of goals.

Some Backstory

In case you’re new around here, the first two years of my husband’s medical school were spent overseas in Australia at the University of Queensland. Those two years were seriously the best time of my life and I am so thankful to have had the opportunity to experience the people, culture, nature, and beauty of that country and the South Pacific.

If you want to dive into some of our favorite things about Australia, check out the posts from my travel blogs:

The latter two years were spent in New Orleans, Louisiana. When we moved back to the States, I was unable to land a job in New Orleans after months of applications. We were starting to feel the financial strain and to be honest, I was worried about what the next step would be. We made the difficult (but confident) choice for me to apply to positions in Nashville, TN where my family is located. Within about a week, I had a new job offer on the table at a really great company. I had to say “yes” to moving away from Caleb in order to support our dreams in the mid-term. It was not a fun decision to make, but we made it together out of love and commitment.

There is so much more I could say about that time of the journey personally, but maybe I will expound in the future. What I will say is that the support of our family and friends meant the world to me during that time (wow, I just love talking about it in the past tense!).

Positive affirmation and words of wisdom straight from the hearts of godly influences truly made all the difference. Throughout the two years, I made trips to visit Caleb when I was able, so I still got to experience the Big Easy to some degree 😉

Being together again, with big goals accomplished for both of us — I completed a master’s degree while Caleb finished his M.D. — has been the blessing to sacrifices made. I’m so thankful for the truth in God’s promises. He’s never left us alone. He has shown us how to keep going and how to grow through adversity.

Ready for What’s Next

SO! Now that it’s time for Caleb to begin residency, we packed up the Nashville apartment and moved to our new house! The process of buying a house across states and during the COVID-19 pandemic was unique, to say the least, but thankfully we had a great team helping us and everything went just smoothly!

We are having fun making the new place our own, envisioning the future here, and getting used to a new town. Lots of fun decorating and doing little house projects. (Shoutout to Caleb’s fam who came to help us move in and make some much-needed updates!)

So glad your book arrived! I actually did a Master of Business Administration (MBA) and it was all online. Just a step to advancing my career hopefully!
